The American Society of Civil Engineers, Los Angeles Younger Member Forum’s Student Night and Job Fair… Oh My Goodness, So Many Acronyms!

The Student Night and Job Fair is an annual event hosted by the Los Angeles YMF chapter. The event begins in the afternoon with a three hour Career Fair, then moves into a networking hour, and ends with an awards dinner. During the dinner, the students who received scholarships from LA YMF and the Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch (MLAB, there we go again with the acronyms) are recognized and honored. The event is a great opportunity for students to network with representatives and hopefully win a scholarship! The event culminates with the most coveted award - ASCE Student Chapter of the Year.

ASCE at UCLA Officer Board 2016-17
Wow! How has the Fall Quarter already ended? So much has happened this year so far, so let’s get into it…

We kicked off the year with a variety of events!
During Welcome Week, we were able to reach out to freshman and transfers at the Enormous Activities Fair and the Engineering Welcome Day. These are great events for introducing new students to our projects and encouraging them to come to events like Open House and General Meeting. We have also been collaborating more with the CEE Department; they have been sending emails out to the all the students in the department, informing them of ASCE certain events. This has truly helped us reach more students and we hope to continue the practice.

Jay H. Higgins presenting ASCE at UCLA the 2016 ASCE Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 9.
This year has been an amazing year for ASCE at UCLA. We won the Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) for the first time since 1994, which was made possible by first place finishes for Concrete Canoe and Environmental Design and top six finishes for all our projects. We also received the 2016 ASCE Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 9, meaning that we are the top student chapter in all of California and one of the best student chapters across the nation. To top it off, we recently won the ESUC Student Group of the Year - Popular Choice Award for the second year in a row, making ASCE at UCLA one of the most active student engineering groups on the UCLA campus.

At the end of each academic year, we celebrate our achievements and give special thanks to those who built and added so much value to ASCE at UCLA at the Awards Banquet. This year, the Awards Banquet took place on May 20th at the UCLA Faculty Center. Over 100 guests, including students, professors, and professionals, dined together and watched Ryan Worley, outgoing ASCE at UCLA Vice President, give a brief recap of our achievements and milestones from the 2015-2016 academic year. Additionally, Dean Jayathi Murthy and Jay H. Higgins, ASCE Region 9 Director, each presented their take on the continuing success, growth, and evolution of the UCLA civil engineering student body and the students' potential impact to the world following graduation.

ASCE Ski Trip at Big Bear Lake.
Over the extended Martin Luther King Kr. Day weekend, 44 of our members traveled to Big Bear Lake for our annual ski trip. We rented a large cabin where everybody got to spend time together and bond. About a third of the attendees went skiing and snowboarding on the first day of the trip, while everyone else went sledding, built snowmen, and relaxed in the cabin. The next day, we spent most of the time indoors, but when we found a lost dog, we went on a mini adventure to it back to a nearby animal shelter. It was an extraordinarily fun weekend in the snow!
