PSWC is a regional conference that takes place every year. This year, University of California, Irvine hosted the event from Wednesday, April 5th to Saturday, April 8th, and 94 UCLA students attended, which was a record high! This conference involved a set of competitions among 19 schools, including 17 different events ranging from design projects to sports games to scavenger games. Many of us worked countless hours all year in order to prepare their projects for the conference, and the hard work definitely paid off.
This year has been an amazing year for ASCE at UCLA. We won the Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) for the first time since 1994, which was made possible by first place finishes for Concrete Canoe and Environmental Design and top six finishes for all our projects. We also received the 2016 ASCE Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 9, meaning that we are the top student chapter in all of California and one of the best student chapters across the nation. To top it off, we recently won the ESUC Student Group of the Year - Popular Choice Award for the second year in a row, making ASCE at UCLA one of the most active student engineering groups on the UCLA campus.
At the end of each academic year, we celebrate our achievements and give special thanks to those who built and added so much value to ASCE at UCLA at the Awards Banquet. This year, the Awards Banquet took place on May 20th at the UCLA Faculty Center. Over 100 guests, including students, professors, and professionals, dined together and watched Ryan Worley, outgoing ASCE at UCLA Vice President, give a brief recap of our achievements and milestones from the 2015-2016 academic year. Additionally, Dean Jayathi Murthy and Jay H. Higgins, ASCE Region 9 Director, each presented their take on the continuing success, growth, and evolution of the UCLA civil engineering student body and the students' potential impact to the world following graduation. Last night, ASCE Bruins won first place overall at the 2016 PSWC! This was a product of strong performances in multiple competitive events and sports activities. We want to thank all our project members, faculty advisors, sponsors and everyone of the ASCE at UCLA family for supporting us through this amazing journey! We could not have done this without all your hard work and commitment to our organization. We also want to thank California State University, Long Beach for being an amazing host, and all the judges, volunteers, and friends from all the participating school chapters for making this a super fun and exciting event. You guys all deserve a pat on the back!
