Sustainable Solutions
Sustainable Solutions is a competitive design project that focuses on the intersectionality of land development and sustainability in order to better serve a community’s needs and issues. This project allows students to gain hands-on experience for students interested in water resources engineering, land development, and holistic urban planning while using the Envision framework. Envision is a globally recognized framework for approaching sustainable, resilient, and equitable infrastructure, and its usage is heavily emphasized in our prompt. An Envision checklist outlines practices that a design team must follow in order to be considered sustainable and equitable.
Our prompt simulates an industry Request for Proposal from a hypothetical client to which we respond with Requests for Information for clarity and a Project Proposal of our designs. Our Project Proposal is made up of deliverables which include a Technical Design Report, a Public Outreach Poster, a 2D site plan exhibit of our proposed site, and an Envision Checklist Documentation. At the competition, we perform a walkthrough of our proposed site and oral presentation as well as present our Public Outreach Poster to judges and other competing schools.

Throughout the year, we host interactive workshops to educate our team members on topics such as low impact development (stormwater quality management design), computer programs such as Bluebeam and SketchUp, and planning for increased access to multimodal transportation. During workdays, students or “project engineers”, implement this knowledge to bring their ideas for the proposed site to life. From October to February, we start brainstorming, researching, and creating our initial design. During March and April, we finalize the designs and perform calculations for earthwork, costs, and stormwater.
We have competed in the Sustainable Solutions competition since its conception in 2021. Since then, our Sustainable Solutions team has qualified for the national competition every year since 2022. We placed 2nd and 3rd overall at the national competition, in 2022 and 2023, respectively. We hope to achieve similar success for the future with the help of our project engineers!
