Environmental Design

C&EE 1 Workshop: "Intro to Water Treatment Processes" Video Presentation
Environmental Design aims to create awareness of water quality needs and to provide practical, hands-on experience for students interested in water resources and environmental engineering. The objective of the Environmental Design competition is to design a water treatment system that can remove a combination of various contaminants typically found in wastewater, such as surfactants, heavy metal ions, inorganic materials, and organic materials, to meet water quality parameters through physical and chemical processes. We achieve our competition objective through hosting interactive workshops to educate our members on water treatment techniques, and conducting research on water contaminants to design a low-cost water treatment system for the annual Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) competition. Over the years, the Environmental Design Project has brought together aspiring environmental engineers and created a supportive and nurturing environment for them to develop their common passion.

During our workdays, we devote time to properly understand the fundamental methods for wastewater treatment. Typically, topics covered by our workshops include coagulation, flocculation, filtration, and adsorption. We also go on field trips together to local wastewater treatment facilities and learn about their different water treatment systems. After competition guidelines are released in Fall quarter, we start brainstorming, designing and constructing our treatment system. This includes lab testing, research, and professional consultation to optimize the effluent quality standards of our treatment system.

This project provides students a valuable opportunity to explore and experience the vast world of water treatment, engineering management and environmental engineering.
