Welcome to our Ethics in Civil Engineering series! Over the next few weeks, we will be discussing some of the ethical concerns we must consider as civil engineers. Whether we like it or not, our work has an impact on living, breathing communities, and we must be careful to understand exactly what that impact is. We hope that these posts can be used as an educational tool to do just that.
Our first post tackles gentrification.
Our first post tackles gentrification.
The issue with gentrification is rooted in the fine line between trying to uplift a community and forcing out its original residents. Do we want to improve the existing community, or change the culture of the community to make it seem more "palatable" to a particular market? These are the questions we must consider when working on new developments in existing communities, especially if those communities have been historically disadvantaged.
Recent concerns over gentrification have been raised in Inglewood, CA, around the site of the new SoFi Stadium.
