| The 2007 Surveying team poses at the regional conference. |
Though most schools teach surveying as part of their civil engineering curricula, UCLA does not. However, through involvement in the surveying project (one of the ASCE regional conference events), students can develop an understanding for this significant branch of civil engineering.
Event Stations
The program will consist of four separate stations: closed horizontal traverse, differential leveling, remote elevation determination, and a written exercise. Each station will require the successful completion of a common surveying task(s) in a 45 minute time period. Upon completion of each station assignment, each team will be required to turn in their field notes and calculations.
Scoring
Stations will be designed to test the students' knowledge and skills at basic land surveying operations, and each will be worth 25 percent of the team's overall score. Teams will be graded independently at each station on factors including completeness and accuracy of their answers, level of care, and quality of their field notes.
