After a slight battle with the mold, the prototype canoe finally came off of the mold. The prototype is one of the thinnest and lightest UCLA canoes made in recent years and the directors are definitely looking forward to preparing it for paddling practice. We're still working on giving the prototype canoe a name, but we'll keep you all posted.

Thanks to all the hard-work and dedication of this year's project members, a prototype mold was constructed in a very short span of time. Casting for the prototype canoe was a huge success bringing out approximately 25 students overall. The younger members took the opportunity to learn as much as possible in preparation for final casting early next year and the project directors took this opportunity to learn from their mistakes in order to make adjustments for constructing the final canoe.
*Casting was even better because a couple officers came out to BBQ lunch for us. Thanks!
NOTE: Due to the Daylight Savings Time Change, work days will now be MWF 3-5pm, unless otherwise announced.

The Concrete Canoe team had it's first social of the year going to eat Korean BBQ in K-town. Everyone had an awesome time trying out all kinds of different meat--even beef tongue! For those new to korean BBQ, it was a great experience and we hope to continue to have socials throughout the year. To top off the night, we even took a trip back to get frozen yogurt and gelato in Westwood. It was definitely quite a treat for both the construction and paddling teams which have both been working hard.

The Project Kick-off was a huge success, bringing in over 40 people. New students had the opportunity to try out their paddling skills and visiting alumni got a chance to race the new generations of directors. This year's kick-off was one of the most successful ever and it is definitely putting the project right on track to succeed.
A BIG Thank You goes out to Linscott, Law & Greenspan, Engineers for providing the food for the event.
Work Days will continue as usual MWF 4-6pm.

After learning much from the National Concrete Canoe Competition, the new concrete canoe directors set off to accomplish a long list of goals during the summer. The concrete canoe team experimented with new concrete mixes and construction techniques. In addition, the team also spent a couple days out at the marina doing repair work and performing construction improvements. After three days of hard work, a new canoe stand now supports the practice canoes to replace the aged stand. Last year's canoe, Archimedes, also made its way home from San Luis Obispo recently after traveling almost 6,000 miles across the continent and back. The Cal Poly SLO concrete canoe team was very generous in offering to drive Archimedes back from the national competition in Montreal, Canada. UCLA's concrete canoe team will forever be thankful for their kind deed.
With the regional competition being held in Hawaii in April 2009, one of the biggest challenges faced by all pacific southwest region universities, with the exception of the host school, is the ability to construct a final product in a shorter amount of time to ensure that the canoe will ship to Hawaii in time for the regional competition. Successfully accomplishing all of the summer goals definitely puts UCLA's concrete canoe team in an optimal position to kick-off the year.
Concrete canoe rules have now been released for over two weeks already and the directors are super-excited to get the project started. The first work day for canoe starts on Monday, September 29 between Engineering I and Engineering V, just off of Portola Walk.
