Message from the President

Dear Students, Alumni, and Faculty,

It is with great pleasure that I present our recently updated and redesigned UCLA ASCE website. I invite you to spend some time learning more about the many activities currently underway.

I would like to congratulate all of our project teams for their hard work throughout the year and look forward to another year of great success. With the Concrete Canoe team just arriving from national competitions with an overall ninth place and the Steel Bridge team earning a bid to national competitions for the first time in ASCE Steel Bridge history, we have much to anticipate and plan for the coming year.

I am very excited to start working with all of the 36 newly elected officers and am truly honored to have this opportunity as their president. I would also like to extend a special thanks to our C&EE faculty who have been instrumental in our success, and ask for their continued support in the following year. As always, we thank our C&EE alumni and sponsors for their guidance as we look forward to another fantastic year and continued involvement from our alumni.

Lastly, I would like to welcome back all of our existing members and invite the new incoming students to our wonderful organization. We encourage everyone to stay involved and possibly consider one of the many leadership opportunities available - from leading projects to organizing events, there is something for everyone. Concrete Canoe Returns from Nationals

E-mail Print PDF
Traveling all the way to Montréal, Canada, the UCLA ASCE Concrete Canoe team finished off a very progressive year with a very respectable 9th place out of 22 nationally competiting teams.

From the article: "The races, both endurance and sprint combined, counted for only 25 percent of the teams’ overall score. The remaining 75 percent was based equally on a technical design paper that highlighted the planning, development, testing and construction of the team’s canoe; a formal oral presentation, in which the team had to detail their canoe’s design, construction, racing ability and other innovative features, as well as defend their choices to the judges during a question and answer session; and the end product—the final racing canoe and project display, which were scored on aesthetics and visual presentation."

Steel Bridge Back From Nat's

E-mail Print PDF

For the first time in many years, the UCLA ASCE Steel Bridge team qualified and competed in national competition.

The journey began with a 3rd place finish at the 2008 Pacific Southwest Regional Conference. The team had mere weeks in between regional and national competition to prepare their bridge for the cross-country flight to Gainesville, Florida. The importance of simply making it to nationals -- learning and seeing other designs and interacticing with other teams -- was the main area of focus. The team put forth their best effort and earned a respectable 36th place. With the new knowledge and confidance gained from this year, be sure to see the Steel Bridge team at it again in 2009!
